"If you can move, you can dance" – Zimbabwean Proverb
There is a tendency to
think that one needs to be a certain age, body shape and have years of
training to dance - this simply is not the case! Dancing is one
of the most natural and simple forms of expression and can relieve
stress, free the spirit and boost your confidence.
Contact Improvisation is a dance form in which the point of contact with another person provides the starting point for a movement exploration. It is most frequently performed in pairs, but can be danced in larger groups. There can be music or it can happen in silence. It is about sharing weight, rolling, suspending, falling, passive and active, energy and awareness. Though the form continues to influence many professional dancers and choreographers, Contact Improvisation can be danced by anyone at any level from complete beginners to advanced. The emphasis is on the flow of energy and on an awareness of one's own body and that of one's partner rather than on producing bodylines and shapes.
There are two parts to the workshop. In the first part you will learn the basic techniques and structure of contact improvisation, through a warm up and body awareness practice, which includes pairing up and learning how to work together. The second part will be a guided jam that will give you the chance to play with what you have learnt.
This workshop is designed for all ages and abilities; come on your own, with friends or a partner, it has no boundaries. Please wear loose comfortable clothing suitable for this event.
