POI are a traditional Maori dance prop which has given rise to a contemporary style of spinning popular all over the world. Poi and fire spinners can now be found at every festival and outdoor event and there are as many different styles as there are spinners!
Poi was performed by Maori men and women in order to keep themselves supple and agile. The rhythmic and hypnotic movements are very relaxing, not to mention an excellent form of exercise to strengthen arms and abdominals.
The Active Arts Community hold a drop-in poi session every week - email jani@activeartists.org.uk for details
